Curved Stalactite Pendant

Curved Stalactite Pendant

Malta’s ancient past has been fused with gender neutral modern design in this pendant which forms part of the Stalactite Collection.

Limestone is the second oldest rock which began forming the Maltese Islands 30 million years old. Today this layer is quarried for building stone, and rarely they find a cavern with stalagmites and stalactites. These ancient caves and formations were the inspiration for the curved shapes of the pendant and, in particular, the stylised surface embossing featured in this necklace.

Previously the stalactites and stalagmites were discarded, but now these sustainable biproducts from the quarrying process are being collected for Tara Lois, then shaped and polished by hand into cabochons by a Maltese artisan, before being set like the precious material they truly are, in recycled 925/sterling silver jewellery.

Using state-of-the-art CAD drawings to create 3D printed wax models, international award-winning jeweller Tara Lois then casts these by hand using ancestral techniques in her Gozo workshop. The pendant is sold on a sustainable adjustable leather cord but a different chain could be used.

Every stalactite stone is unique and each casting has slight variations to texture and finish. The result always tells the fascinating story of Malta today – a fusion of the ancient and modern in a contemporary design.

Approx pendant size: 4.6cm long x 3.5cm (widest). Sustainable leather cord 40cm minimum/80cm maximum length, adjustable, colours may change and available in other colours. Hand made in sustainable 925 sterling silver with an ethically sourced Maltese stalactite stone.
