Up to 30 million years ago a layer of limestone rock began forming the Maltese islands. Now Malta’s ancient past has been fused with modern gender neutral design in this collection by Tara Lois.
The ancient limestone is quarried across Malta for building stone and very rarely a cavern is found with stalagmites and stalactites. These ancient caves and formations were the inspiration for the curved shapes of the bracelet and, in particular, the contemporary stylised surface embossing.
Previously the stalactites and stalagmites were discarded, but now for Tara Lois these unwanted biproducts are being collected. Then a Maltese artisan painstakingly shapes and polishes them by hand into cabochons which Tara Lois sets. Each one is a unique stones showing the layers and millennia over which it was formed.
Mixing the ancient with the modern continues as the bracelet is created using state-of-the-art CAD drawings to create 3D printed wax models. Tara Lois then casts the bracelets by hand in her Gozo workshop and each casting is slightly different, although the design itself is not exclusive. The leather strap is also handmade in Gozo, and it is possible to change this for different coloured or length of leather.
This stalactite bracelet forms part of a collection together with a ring, pendants and earrings which tell the fascinating story of Malta today – a fusion of the ancient and modern.
