These stunning dangling earrings represent 30 million years of Malta’s ancient past fused with modern design by Tara Lois, a leading Maltese contemporary jewellery designer.
A layer of limestone is the second oldest bedrock of the Maltese Islands, which is quarried for building stone, including the construction of MICAS. Very rarely a cavern is found with stalagmites and stalactites and these ancient caves and formations were the inspiration for the shapes of these earrings and the stylised surface embossing featured in this collection.
Previously the stalactites and stalagmites were discarded, but now these biproducts are being collected for Tara Lois. Then they are cut into cylinders and polished by hand by a Maltese artisan, before being set like the precious material they truly are, in contemporary recycled 925/sterling silver.
Tara Lois is an international award-winning jeweller, and her hand fabrication process continues merging ancient skills with modern techniques. The top of these earrings are cast in her Gozo workshop using state-of-the-art 3D printed wax models which she designed on the computer using specialist CAD software.
Each casting has slight variations to texture and finish and each stone is unique. The result always tells the fascinating story of Malta today – a fusion of the ancient and modern.
Approx size: 5.5cm long x 1.2cm wide x 0.8cm deep. Hand made in sustainable 925 sterling silver with hand cut Maltese stalactite or stalagmite stone.
